Activities
-
Pond dipping (spring and summer)
Small groups visit the pond platform and sweep the water with nets to see what wildlife is hiding there. Typical finds include water boatmen, mosquito larvae, pond skaters, and plenty of surprises. At the end, everyone gathers to compare discoveries before returning all creatures safely to their habitat. -
Leaf bashing (Hapa-zome)
Leaves are placed between pieces of fabric and gently hammered to release their natural pigments. The colours and shapes transfer onto the fabric, creating unique nature-inspired patterns. -
Forest flags
Children can use the leaf bashing technique or paints and stencils to design their own flags. Once finished, the flag is attached to a stick to wave proudly around the woods. -
Den building
Working in small groups, participants create their own hideaway using tarpaulins, paracord, and natural connectors. Each group can design and build a shelter that’s sturdy enough to sit in while enjoying a hotdog or snack. -
Sword making
Learn how to lash two sticks together to create a simple handle for the sword. Once assembled, the sword can be decorated to suit knights, adventurers, or woodland warriors. -
Wood cookies
Saw a slice from a branch and decorate it with a design such as a fox, hedgehog, badger, ladybird, or anything you like. A small drilled hole can turn it into a necklace or medallion with a piece of string. -
Spinning tops
Cut your own wooden disk, decorate it, drill a small hole, and add a stick in the centre to transform it into a spinning top. A peeler can be used to shape the point of the stick so it spins smoothly on the ground. -
Magic wands or rainbow sticks
Shape a stick using a peeler to smooth the bark, then colour or decorate it to create your own wand or rainbow stick. -
Elder bead jewellery
Choose a piece of elder wood, peel the bark if you like, and colour it. Cut it into beads, remove the pith with a tent peg, and thread them onto string to make a natural necklace or bracelet. -
Fire three ways (ages 6 and over)
Learn the basics of fire lighting using three different methods: friction with flint and steel, a chemical reaction using glycerine and potassium permanganate, and an electrical spark created with batteries.
All activities will be tailored to your child's age, maturity or skill level.
Extras
A cargo net can also be put up for children to play in.
(Although not suitable for wet days)
